Residential kitchen and bathroom plumbing can develop problems over time. These plumbing problems can result due to continuous use of dishwashers, toilets, showers, sinks, and washing machines. Residential pipes in antique homes are normally made of copper or galvanized steel. As a homeowner, an investment in the quality of your home’s residential plumbing is vital. Kitchen and bathroom plumbing problems can be prevented, and we help consumers with high quality residential plumbing.

We provide residential plumbing services for your kitchen or bathroom. If you need a residential plumber in Cape Town, our services include bathroom plumbing, kitchen plumbing, and your septic system and sewer lines. Top 5 DIY Plumbing Fixes Every Homeowner Should Know.

Plumbing Fix #1: How to Shut Off the Water

At the top of every homeowner’s DIY plumbing list is knowing how to turn the water on and off to your house as well as the individual plumbing fixtures in it. Turning off the water is the first step in stopping a leak or making other plumbing repairs, so it’s important locate the main water shutoff valve to your home now before you need it.
Turning Off All the Water in Your House
To turn off all the water to your house, locate the main water shutoff valve, which is usually found at the water meter. Most water meters are buried in the ground near the street and have a concrete cover, though some may be mounted on the side of the house.
Water meter.
If you can’t find the water meter, call your local utility company and ask for help locating it. Once you’ve found the meter, remove the cover, and turn the shutoff valve 90 degrees with a water meter cutoff key to turn off all the water in your house. In a pinch you may be able to turn the valve with an adjustable wrench if you can't find a cutoff key.
Some houses may also have a secondary main shutoff valve located where the water main enters the house that can be used to turn off all the water in your home.
Turning Off the Water at Plumbing Fixtures
Shutoff valve under sink.
In many cases you don’t have to turn off all the water to the house to repair a plumbing fixture, such as a sink faucet or toilet. Instead, you can close the shutoff valve located below the fixture by turning it clockwise to turn off the water to just that fixture.
Bathtubs and showers may not have shutoff valves, and if they do they can be harder to find. Look for access in the wall or closet that backs up to the tub or shower to see if the water lines have shutoff valves. If a plumbing fixture doesn’t have a shutoff valve, you’ll need to turn off all the water to the house before repairing it.
Plumbing Fix #2: How to Turn Off a Water Heater (Geyser)

It’s important to know how to turn off your hot water heater in case it develops a leak, overheats, if you’re going out of town for an extended period of time, or to drain it.
There are two steps involved in turning off a water heater:
Turning Off Gas or Electricity to Water Heater: On gas hot water heaters, turn the gas supply knob on the water heater to the off position. For electric water heaters, flip the circuit breaker or remove the fuse that powers the water heater.
Turning Off Water to Water Heater: To turn off the water to a hot water heater, turn the shutoff valve on the cold water supply pipe going into the hot water heater clockwise.

Plumbing Fix #3: How to Fix a Leaky Pipe

Depending on the type of plumbing pipe and how bad the damage is, you may be able to repair a leak in a pipe with epoxy putty or a pipe repair clamp, which are available at home centers or plumbing supply stores. If the damage is more severe, the pipe itself may need to be replaced.
To repair a leak in a pipe with epoxy putty:
Find the location of the leak.
Turn off the main water supply..
Dry the pipe with a towel.
Knead the two-part epoxy putty together.
Apply the putty around the pipe, and allow it to set.
Turn the water back on, and check the pipe for leaks.
To repair a leak in a pipe with a pipe repair clamp:
Find the location of the leak.
Turn off the main water supply.
Loosen the screws on the pipe repair clamp.
Place the repair clamp around the pipe.
Tighten the screws so the rubber gasket on the clamp is against the leak.

Plumbing Fix #4: How to Stop a Toilet from Running

Stopping a toilet from running is usually a fairly easy fix, so don’t call your local plumbers before trying to repair it yourself. A running toilet is usually caused by either the water level in the tank being set too high or a worn out rubber flapper between the tank and bowl.
To adjust the water level in the toilet tank:
Remove the lid from the toilet tank.
Turn the adjustment screw or slide the rod to lower the float in the tank.
Flush the toilet, and allow it to refill.
Check tank water level to make sure it's below the top of the overflow tube.
If the water level is still too high, continue to adjust the float height as needed.
To replace a toilet tank flapper:
Turn off the shutoff valve below the toilet by turning it clockwise.
Flush the toilet to remove the water in the tank.
Remove the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank.
Remove the flapper chain from the tank handle rod.
Wipe off the rim of the drain at the bottom of the tank.
Install a new rubber flapper.
Attach the new flapper chain to the tank handle rod.
Turn the water to the toilet back on.
Allow the tank to fill up and check to make sure the toilet stops running.
Adjust the flapper valve chain on the handle as needed so the toilet flushes easily.
Turn the water back on, and check the pipe for leaks.

Plumbing Fix #5: How to Fix a Dripping Faucet (Mixer)

If you're sick of the constant sound of a dripping faucet, take control of the situation and repair it yourself! Depending on the type of faucet you have, the process of fixing a leaky faucet is fairly easy.
Repairing Leaking Compression Faucets (Mixer):
These older type faucets use a rubber washer to stop the flow of water, which can wear out over time.
To replace the washer on a compression faucet (mixer):
Turn off the water to the faucet at the shutoff valve.
Remove the decorative cap on the faucet handle.
Remove the screw under the cover in the faucet handle.
Pull the faucet handle off to expose the valve.
Use a deep socket wrench to remove the valve from the faucet.
Remove the screw holding the washer on the end of the valve.
Replace the washer with a new one of the same size.
Apply Teflon plumber’s tape to the valve threads.
Screw the valve back in the faucet.
Tighten the valve with the wrench, being careful not to over tighten it.
Put the handle and screw back on the valve.
Press the decorative cover back on the end of the handle.
Turn the shutoff valve on, and check the faucet for leaks.
Repairing Leaking Cartridge or Ball Faucets:
These types of valves are found on newer, single lever faucets. Unlike compression faucets, cartridge and ball faucets have more parts, making them harder to repair.
Cartridge Faucets: Pry off the decorative fixture, remove the handle, and replace the entire valve cartridge.
Ball Type Faucets: Ball type faucets have many parts, so it’s often easier to buy a repair kit instead of trying to replace one part. Purchase a repair kit that fits your faucet at a home center or plumbing supply store, and follow the instructions included.

Signs Of A Sewer Drain Blockage.

A sewer drain blockage is a very serious problem that can be considered a plumbing emergency. Since the water has no place to go it will all come back up into the household plumbing in one way or another. When you have a sewer drain blockage you should not use any of the plumbing in the home until the stoppage is cleared.

If you suspect that you have a sewer drain blockage it is important to confirm this and clear it right away.
There are several ways to verify a sewer drain blockage.
Signs that you may have a sewer drain blockage:

Multiple Fixtures Are Blocked -

A very obvious sign of a sewer drain blockage is when more than one plumbing fixture backs up at the same time. The toilets in particular are affected by this, but other fixtures can also be involved. If you suspect that you have a sewer drain blockage start by checking other fixtures in the home.

Toilets - Toilets have the most direct path to the sewer and the biggest drain line in the house, so if there is a problem with the sewer drain you will notice it here. It is rare to have a main line sewer stoppage and the toilets are working correctly.

Tub and Shower - Other drains typically affected by a main line stoppage are those in the tub and shower. This is due to the fact that they sit lower down than say a sink drain. Check whether the tub and shower drains are blocked if you suspect a sewer drain blockage.

Strange Reactions When Using Fixtures - The next thing to look for when you suspect a sewer drain clog are any unexpected or unusual reactions when using plumbing fixtures.

Flush The Toilet - If flushing the toilet results in water backing up or coming up into the tub or shower this is usually a clear sign of a sewer drain clog. The flushed water that can not go down the sewer drain flows back up the pipes and comes out at the lowest point which is usually the shower drain.

Run The Sink - Another strange reaction to look for is trapped air in the plumbing system. Do this by running water in the sink closest to the toilet for a minute or so. If the toilet bubbles or you can see the water level in the toilet rising then the clog is very likely in the main sewer line and not in the toilet.

Washing Machine - An unexpected sign of a sewer drain clog can happen when you run the wash machine. If the water draining out of the washing machine causes the toilet to overflow or backs up into the tub or shower it could be the sewer main.

Note: This could just be a washing machine and shower problem and not a sewer drain clog. If the toilets are still flushing fine while this occurs then this is likely due to a washing machine stoppage and not a sewer main.

10 Cold-Weather Plumbing Tips for Homeowners.

That first chilly winter morning is the perfect reminder that when winter arrives it can be sudden, often leaving homeowners unprepared for the plumbing problems associated with cold weather. The number of frozen pipe claims nearly tripled nationally from 2008 to 2009, to more than 26,000 claims. This hassle and extra expense is easily prevented with a couple hours worth of weekend chores or a quick call to your local plumber.
Failure to prepare early might prove costly when pipes freeze, which is why the plumbing experts at Drain Bros recommend taking these winterization precautions early, when time is on your side, instead of waiting until cold weather arrives.
These 10 tips that can save you a bundle are easily managed in between washing dishes and mowing the lawn.
* Disconnect outside water hoses. If left connected during freezing temperatures, water in hoses will freeze and expand causing connecting faucets and pipes to freeze and break.
* Inspect outside faucets. If dripping or leaking, make the necessary repairs or call a plumber before a freeze.
* If your home is equipped with interior shut-off valves leading to outside faucets, close them and drain water from the pipes.
* Cover outside faucets using an inexpensive faucet insulation kit.
* Insulate pipes in unheated areas. Apply heat tape or thermostat-controlled heat cables around exposed pipes.
* Make sure your furnace is set no lower than 55 degrees during the winter to prevent pipes from freezing. Note that when pipes freeze, water pressure builds causing cracks, whether the pipe is made of plastic, copper or steel. Even a tiny crack can unleash 900 litres of water in a single day.
* Your water heater works harder during winter months. Drain corrosion-causing sediment from the tank, which reduces energy efficiency if it's not removed.
* Set water heater thermostat to 120 F for optimum performance without risk of scalding.
* Clear any leaves and debris from roof gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage throughout the winter season.
* Inspect and clean sump pit. Remove any rocks and debris from pit then dump a bucket of water into the sump pit to test the pump. If it turns on and pumps water out then turns itself off, it is operating properly.

Preventing Sewer Back-up.

Things You Should Never Flush Down The Toilet.
1. Bathroom wipes
these “moist towelettes” or as I like to call them “adult baby wipes” are becoming an increasingly popular bathroom accessory. Despite the fact that they’re marketed to be flushed like toilet paper, these wipes are creating clogs and backups in sewer systems around the nation. “An industry trade group this month revised its guidelines on which wipes can be flushed, and has come out with a universal stick-figure, do-not-flush symbol to put on packaging. (Same thing goes for actual baby wipes and cleaning wipes).

2. Condoms
They probably seem small and very similar to toilet tissue, but these latex prophylactics are like kryptonite for septic tanks and sewage treatment plants.

3. Cotton Balls & Swabs
They’re just cotton, right? It might seem like these tiny bathroom tools would just get soggy and eventually break down in the watery pipeline, but they don’t. They eventually gather together in bends of the pipe, causing massive blockages.

4. Prescription Medication
Don’t need the rest of those pills? Many people feel like they’re doing the safe thing, keeping meds out of the wrong hands by flushing them, but it’s actually very dangerous. These drugs destroy bacteria, contaminate groundwater supplies, and can have terrible effects on wildlife downstream.

5. Paper towels
These are extremely wasteful and reuseable rags/napkins are much better. However, if you do use paper towels, know that they’re NOT designed to break down in water like toilet paper. Flushing them can cause BIG problems.

6. Cigarette butts
Not only do they look nasty when floating in the toilet water, they’re full of incredibly toxic chemicals that just end up in the water supply. Also, think of all the water you’re wasting to get rid of ONE tiny butt!

7. Band-aids
These are made from non-biodegradable plastic, which is terrible for the environment and can cause terrible clogs in the sewage system.

8. Dental floss
Despite feeling like string, dental floss is not biodegradable. Once flushed, it loves to wrap itself around other objects in the pipeline, making tiny clogs bigger in an instant.

9. Fats, oil, and grease
This is a tough one, and everyone has done it at one point, but cooking fats should NEVER go in the drain or garbage disposal. It seems like a liquid when it’s hot, but as soon as this grease hits the drain, it cools and congeals, becoming pipe-clogging wax. Scrape it into the trash, or, if it’s clean bacon fat, save it in a jar for reuse.

10. Cat litter
I can understand how this would seem ok — it’s just the cat’s poop and pee, right? But cat litter is made from clay and sand, two things that you should NEVER be put down a toilet. Not to mention that cat waste contains toxins and parasites that shouldn’t be in our water system.

11. Disposable diapers
just because there’s poop in it, doesn’t mean it belongs in the toilet. Diapers are made from toxic plastic that’s designed to expand when it comes in contact with water. In the slim chance you actually get it down the drain, it will instantly be caught in the u-bend, and cause a terrible back up.
